U Compass
Stay oriented.
Introduction
U Compass is a smart reminder device inspired by the ancient Chinese compass, designed to help users stay on track and avoid forgetfulness in their daily routines. The project draws from the concept of spatial memory, allowing users to set reminders by rotating a spoon-like indicator to a specific position. When triggered, the device provides tactile and auditory feedback, ensuring users remember their tasks amidst daily distractions.
This project is a fusion of ancient design and modern technology, exploring themes of memory, direction, and human-machine interaction. It serves as a reminder that even in a fast-paced, technology-driven world, simple and intuitive tools can help us navigate our daily lives.

Project Description
The inspiration for U Compass came from viewing the images in the graphic novel Here by Richard McGuire, as presented in class. One image, in particular, resonated deeply with me—a scene from 1957 titled "Trying to Remember," where a woman stands in a doorway, puzzled, asking herself, "Why did I come in here again?" This relatable moment of forgetfulness sparked the idea to create a device that helps users navigate through daily distractions and avoid such lapses in memory.
The design draws from the ancient Chinese "south pointer" compass, symbolizing direction and guidance. The device features a spoon-shaped indicator that users rotate to set reminders. The spoon vibrates and emits a sound when a reminder is triggered, ensuring users don't forget important tasks.
The project explores the concept of spatial memory—how we associate tasks with physical locations. By leveraging this natural tendency, U Compass provides an intuitive and interactive way to set and receive reminders.
Below is a one-page comic that I made to present the scenario in a visual and fun way :)
Design and Functionality
U Compass is designed to mimic the ancient Chinese compass, with a spoon-shaped indicator that users rotate to set reminders. The device uses a DMS-MG90-A servo motor to provide tactile feedback through vibration, and a buzzer for auditory feedback. A light sensor detects changes in ambient light to trigger the alarm, ensuring the reminder is activated at the right moment.
Key Features:
Reminder Setting: Users rotate the spoon to a specific position to set a reminder.
Alarm Trigger: The device vibrates and sounds a buzzer when the reminder is triggered by the light sensor.
Snooze/Dismiss: Users can snooze or dismiss reminders by rotating the spoon to different positions.
The device is housed in a laser-cut plywood casing, with a 3D-printed spoon serving as the main interaction point. The design is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, blending ancient symbolism with modern technology.
